Glenn Weldon Tillery, MD: a conversation with the editor

G. W. Tillery and W. C. Roberts

Weldon Tillery was born on December 29, 1932, in Seagraves, Texas, and grew up in Lubbock, Texas, after many early moves. He received a bachelor's degree with a major in pharmacy from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque in 1955 and a medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1959. His internship was in internal medicine at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Dallas, Texas. After 2 years in the US Air Force Medical Corps, he returned to Dallas in 1962 and, during the next 4 years, completed his residency in anatomic and clinical pathology. He then moved to Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, as acting chief of laboratory services of the Arabian American Oil Company (ARAMCO). He remained there for 6 months and then returned to Dallas, Texas, where he became the associate pathologist at Presbyterian Hospital in 1967. Three years later, however, he returned to Dhahran as chief of pathology services of ARAMCO. In 1972, he joined Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) as associate director of pathology. In 1987, he became director of pathology at BUMC. Although he stepped down as director in 1997, Dr. Tillery continues as a surgical pathologist at BUMC. His influence at the medical center through the years has been considerable. He was a major force in building the Department of Pathology at BUMC to what it has become, one of the finest in the country. He is also a wonderful human being and a pleasure to be around. He is married to the delightful Mary Louise Mashburn.
