Institute of Metabolic Disease at Baylor Research Institute
Supporting the Institute for Metabolic Disease

The Institute for Metabolic Disease is one of the few centers in the United States where new and effective treatments for inherited metabolic diseases are being developed. Philanthropic support from the community is critical for the Institute to continue this important work.

Areas of need include:

Metabolic Research
Metabolic Research funding supports the Institute’s current programs, clinical initiatives and research efforts in metabolic disease.

Biomedical Genetics
Funding supports the development of a new program to provide comprehensive clinical evaluations for the Institutes patients and families. Success for this initiative rests on the Institute’s ability to recruit and support a biochemical genetics physician, a neurometabolic physician and a nurse practitioner. Support for this program helps the Institute find treatments for patients who have a proven diagnosis but who have not received adequate medical treatment.

Medical Education
Medical education programs train fellows and post-graduate students for positions as clinical researchers in metabolic diseases. Support allows students to continue their advanced studies at the Institute for Metabolic Disease.

Expanding Research and Diagnostic Services
Investigators in this program support ongoing research activities. Success for this initiative requires support for a developmental chemist who can develop and validate new diagnostic testing procedures for inherited metabolic diseases.

Enhancing the Supplemental Newborn Screening Program
Funding supports staff and facilities for an expanded program that screens newborn infants for approximately 30 inherited metabolic diseases. With early diagnosis and treatment, some metabolic diseases may be managed effectively.

Molecular Research
The Institute of Metabolic Disease seeks to strengthen the area of expertise of molecular research to accelerate the development of new treatments. Treating complex diseases requires very strong integrated research at both the molecular and metabolic (biochemical) levels.

Neuropharmacology Research
Funding for this program supports research with a focus on understanding basic mechanisms of toxicity to the central nervous system that result from in-born errors of metabolism. Research is applied directly to patient treatment.

Baylor Health Care System continues to perform innovative medical research in many other program areas. Information on other ways to contribute.
