Folate (total)

Folate is needed to make DNA and RNA, the building blocks of cells and in the formation of methionine and S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe). Folate deficiency can lead to anemia and various neuropsychiatric complications including neural tube defects, developmental delay, depression, dementia and myelopathy. A deficiency of folate may increase your blood level of total homocysteine. Recent evidence suggests that an elevated homocysteine level is an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
