Amino Acids - Quantitative
Amino Acid analysis is helpful in the evaluation and management of urea cycle disorders, organic acidemias, and amino acid disorders. Serum or plasma testing is helpful in evaluation of abnormal newborn screening tests.
Quantitative results for 42 amino acids, with age related reference ranges and interpretations are included in the test report.

Department: Neuropharmacology
Methodology: HPLC ion exchange chromatography with absorbance detection
Sample:
• Plasma (preferred) – 0.5 mL of heparinized plasma
• Serum – 0.5 mL of serum collected in a red-top tube
• Cerebrospinal Fluid – 0.5 mL collected in sterile container and frozen at -80°C.
Absolute minimum for all sample types – 150 uL
Handling:
• Plasma and Serum -spin down the whole blood sample within 1 hour of collection.
• Cerebrospinal Fluid - freeze CSF immediately and store at -80°C until transport.
Shipping:
• Plasma and Serum - Ship sample overnight with 3-4 lbs of dry ice using a guaranteed overnight courier.
• CSF – Ship sample Monday through Wednesday only. Ship sample overnight with 3-4 lbs of dry ice using a guaranteed overnight courier.
