Caruth Labor and Delivery
Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas has an 18 bed Labor and Delivery Unit, as well as a 6 bed observation unit. Perinatologists are available 24 hours a day to stabilize an incoming patient, as well as for phone consultation. The family-centered philosophy allows for the new family to remain together during the entire birth process. Once a high risk referral patient is received at Baylor Dallas and has given consent, the referring doctor will receive weekly summaries by fax as well as notification of delivery.
Antepartum Unit
There are 24 beds on the newly renovated antepartum unit at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. The staff on this unit is highly skilled RN's trained specifically to care for women and their families during a High Risk Pregnancy. We offer private rooms for all of our patients and monitoring equipment for maternal fetal surveillance. We have a Perinatal Testing Facility staffed by experienced Perinatologists.
In addition to our highly trained medical and nursing staff, our Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy staff provides a number of Complementary Therapies which may include therapeutic massage, exercise designed with the pregnant woman on bed rest in mind, and recreational therapy. We have on site psychological and spiritual counseling available to our patients and their families. Our childbirth educators are able to provide classes for those women unable to attend traditional classes due to restrictions of bed rest. Also, our Lactation Consultants are available for teaching. We are in the process of developing an immersion therapy program in conjunction with our Rehabilitation Department
Prenatal Diagnosis Center
The Prenatal Diagnosis Center provides a full range of obstetric genetic services, including: genetic screening and counseling, amniocentesis, consultative ultrasound and percutaneous umbilical cord sampling. The center also offers a complete range of services for high-risk pregnancies, including expectant mothers who have or may have had diabetes, hypertension, cancer, heart disease, a transplant or other conditions that could put the mother or fetus at risk.
Neonatal ICU
Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas has an advanced Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). There are 83 beds in our level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Patients in the NICU vary from extremely premature infants to term infants with surgical or medical needs.
Babies in the NICU have several skilled staff members to care for their medical needs, including: Neonatologists, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses, Respiratory Therapists, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers and chaplains, all dedicated to the NICU patients. In addition, family care coordinators help to provide education for families as well as facilitate family and medical communication. The unit is a member of The Vermont Oxford Network to improve patient care through evidenced based practice. The Vermont Oxford Network is a non-profit voluntary collaboration of health care professionals dedicated to improving the quality and safety of medical care for newborn infants and their families through a coordinated program that includes research, education and quality improvement projects.
Neonatal Transport Team
A group of nurses, neonatal nurse practitioners and respiratory therapists make up the Neonatal Transport Team. They are able to travel by helicopter, airplane, or ambulance promptly to care for a sick infant delivered in a level I setting. The transport team also keeps the referring care team updated on the infant's condition through out the hospital stay by weekly faxes with the patient's consent.
TINY TOTS Clinic
The Infant and Young Toddlers Outpatient Treatment Specialty Clinic (TINY TOTS Clinic) is an outpatient clinic designed for the primary care of complex NICU graduates of Baylor facilities. These infants will receive all follow up care for up to 3 years,
depending on their specific medical needs, which may include: developmental testing, Synagis® administration, well child check ups, and monitoring of medications.
