Office of Patient Safety
The Office of Patient Safety (OPS) facilitates the implementation of evidence-based patient safety practices throughout Baylor Health Care System (BHCS). Formed in 2005, the OPS seeks to intensify existing patient safety programs, promote an organizational culture conducive to the development of patient safety innovations, and guide employees in the adoption of patient safety values.

Consistent with the Institute of Medicine's goals to improve patient safety, as well as the components of STEEEP™, BHCS established the system-level Patient Safety Committee in 2005. The Patient Safety Committee makes recommendations to the Best Care Committee with regard to programming and direction.

BHCS patient safety programs represent the integrated efforts of the OPS, the Center for Health Care Improvement, and the BHCS Department of Risk Management. Under the leadership of Donald Kennerly, MD, PhD, Vice President of Patient Safety and Chief Patient Safety Officer, and Vicki Good, MSN, Director of Patient Safety, the OPS collaborates with these departments to operationalize patient safety goals across all BHCS hospitals and the HealthTexas Provider Network, BHCS's affiliated physician organization.

Through its focus on patient safety, the OPS advances BHCS's mission to serve all people through exemplary health care, education, research, and community service, and helps to fulfill its vision to be trusted as the best place to give and receive safe, quality, compassionate health care.
