Baylor Explores Alternatives to Blood Pressure Medications

October 29, 2012 -- Baylor Health Care System researchers are studying an approach that could help normalize blood pressure without medication.  The Symplicity trial tests a minimally invasive procedure known as renal denervation that uses heat generated by radio frequency to disrupt nerve communication to and from the kidneys.  This treatment can reduce over-activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which is a frequent cause of chronic high blood pressure.  Read Blog

Last Chance Heart Procedure Saving Lives: Patient Now Plans Trip to Europe With Son

May 7, 2012 – Because of a faulty aortic valve clogged with calcium, Gloria Ezaki, 75, was living on borrowed time. She was not a candidate for traditional open heart surgery; however, she did qualify for the newly approved--minimally invasive TAVR procedure. Dr. David Brown, medical director, THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano, inserted a catheter through a needle prick in her groin and guided a balloon and tissue heart valve through the artery up to the heart. The new valve was positioned inside Gloria's existing valve using the balloon to deploy the frame which held the new valve. It all takes about 90 minutes. Watch Video 

 

Doctors, Researchers Credit Estrogen With Improving Recovery Time

May 3, 2012— North Texas doctors believe they may have found a wonder drug –– something that could help patients heal up to six times faster. Researchers at Baylor Research Institute of Dallas are using estrogen in a groundbreaking clinical trial involving trauma patients. According to Dr. Michael Ramsay, president of BRI, the female hormone surrounds dying cells, keeps them alive, and even begins to heal them. Watch Video

 

Researcher Testing Inhalable Insulin for Diabetics

May 3, 2012— Researchers in Dallas are studying an experimental therapy that could eliminate insulin injections for both type 1 and type 2 diabetics. It is the same medicine but in powder form that a patient breathes in through their mouth. Dr. Priscilla Hollander is leading the clinical trial at the Baylor Endocrine Center in Dallas. She believes the sheer convenience of inhalable insulin will make managing diabetes easier.
