Baylor's Lupus Research Program Receives New Funding

The Alliance for Lupus Research has awarded Baylor Research Institute partner, Argos Therapeutics, a $1 million grant to continue research on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a disease that afflicts more than a million Americans. The money will be used to further research efforts led by Jacques Banchereau, Ph.D., director of Baylor Institute for Immunology Research (BIIR), to determine the cause of SLE and develop potential treatments.

Previous research conducted at Baylor in collaboration with Argos, has indicated that the protein interferon-alpha may be the root cause of SLE, an auto-immune disease. The Institute's future research will focus on blocking the activity of this protein to determine if neutralizing it is an effective therapy for those with the disease.
