Below are some frequently asked questions about the Scientific Publications Office at Baylor University Medical Center. If you have a question that is not addressed here, contact us.
How do I know the Scientific Publications Office is familiar enough with my specialty to edit my manuscript?
We don't claim to be experts in any field of science or medicine. We are experts in editing. However, we probably have experience with your specialty. All staff work on the Proceedings, a general medical journal featuring articles in many different disciplines, and have major medical reference books at their disposal. In addition, staff have edited articles for a variety of journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association and The New England Journal of Medicine.
What turnaround time can I expect for editing?
We can edit your manuscript or book chapter within 5 business days. If you need it sooner, please let us know. On occasion, we may be able to offer 24-hour turnaround—particularly for grant applications.
What types of manuscript development projects has the Scientific Publications Office completed?
We have transcribed a variety of audiotaped or videotaped presentations, from clinicopathological conferences to grand rounds presentations, and turned them into manuscripts. Steps in this process include rewriting the transcript to make it more formal and to eliminate repetition, adding appropriate headings, converting some of your slides to text and making others tables and figures, and working with you to add references.
What turnaround time can I expect on my manuscript development project?
When we meet with you in our free initial consultation, we can establish any deadlines as well as total project cost. Generally, at least 10 business days would be required before we could submit the first draft.
Can the Scientific Publications Office work on other publication projects for me?
Sure. We would be happy to work with you on your next newsletter, annual report, or other publication. In addition to editorial expertise, we have production expertise, so we could design your project and prepare it for the printer. We could also be coordinators or project managers when you are editing a textbook or serving as a guest editor of a journal.
How is billing handled?
Everyone is billed after the job is complete. Baylor clients paying with Baylor funds are given an institutional requisition to sign, and non-Baylor clients are billed by the Baylor accounting department. Sales tax will be added to bills only for our for-profit clients.
