| Copyediting includes checking for spelling, grammar, word usage, sentence structure, and flow; verifying calculations and references; checking figure and reference numbers; and ensuring that the manuscript follows the author instructions. |
Substantive editing involves reviewing the organization of the paper. The editor may suggest, for example, moving a paragraph to another section, adding new headings, deleting repetitious information, or explaining some areas in more depth. The editor may also condense abstracts (or other sections, such as elements in a grant proposal) to adhere to the required word limit. |
