Chemotherapy alone is often used following surgery for advanced stage lung cancers to decrease the risk of recurrence. Chemotherapy also enhances the effects of radiation by sensitizing cancer cells to the radiation. Because of the potential for increased toxicity from chemotherapy combined with radiotherapy, it is important that patients be properly selected for such treatment and receive the appropriate supportive measures.
Some new biological agents, such as TarcevaŽ, ErbituxT and AvastinŽ, are enhancing the ability to treat advanced lung cancer. In some instances, these drugs are combined with more conventional chemotherapy agents to enhance their effectiveness. In other instances, they can be a reasonable alternative to chemotherapy for certain patients.
