Pathology Conferences

Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas Pathology residents attend regular conferences.

 

Teaching Conferences

 

Didactic lectures

Tuesdays 7:30-10:30 a.m.

Didactic lectures from teaching faculty are organ/specialty based and are on a two-year curriculum cycle with new topics each month.

 

Unknowns conference

Thursdays 8 – 9 a.m.

Fun, educational, interactive conferences in which a resident and attending are paired each week and choose a topic with corresponding slides. Residents look at the slides prior to the conference. During the conference, residents volunteer their descriptions and diagnosis for each case and the teaching resident and attending lead discussion for each case.

 

Neuropathology conference

One Thursday per month, 8 – 9 a.m.

A slide-based monthly review of neuropathology topics and their correlations with molecular pathology.

 

Hematopathology

Fridays, 8 – 9 a.m.

 

Dermatopathology

Two Wednesdays per month, 8 – 9 a.m.

 A slide-based review of topics in dermatopathology given by dermatopathologist, Allison Readinger, MD.

 

AP/CP Journal Club

One Tuesday per month

Every month, one resident is assigned to select and present a journal article with guidance from the faculty member assigned that month. The topics for the journal club correspond with the topic for didactics that month.

 

Interdepartmental Conferences

These educational conferences are given by pathology faculty in coordination with faculty and fellows from different specialties.

 

Hematology/Oncology

Wednesdays, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. (lunch provided)

 

Morbidity and Mortality

One Tuesday per month

Noon – 1 p.m. (lunch provided)

 

Liver/GI

One Wednesday per month

Noon – 1 p.m. (lunch provided)

 

Renal

One Friday per month

Noon – 1 p.m. (lunch provided)

 

Surgery/Pathology

One Monday per month

5 p.m. (light snacks provided)

 

Tumor Site Conferences

Surgeons, oncologists, radiologists and pathologists present their perspectives on each patient presented. This is an opportunity to learn about interesting and complex cases and understand clinical implications for pathology diagnoses.

 

The pathology resident is responsible for preparing and presenting a power point presentation on the tumor histology, pathologic findings and staging. All cases are reviewed with the attending prior to the conference.

 

Site conferences include:

  • Bone and Soft Tissue – First Tuesday of the month
  • Breast – Alternating Thursdays
  • Chest – First, second and third Wednesdays
  • Endocrine – Third Tuesday
  • GI – Alternating Thursdays
  • GYN – Wednesdays
  • Head and Neck – Second and fourth Tuesdays
  • Liver – Second Tuesday
  • Neuro – Second and fourth Wednesdays
  • Pancreas – First and third Fridays
  • Skin – First and third Wednesdays                                                           
  • Skull Base – First Wednesdays
  • Urology -- Third Wednesdays
