Baylor University Medical Center
Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency
Facilities and Resources
The residency program combines a diverse patient population with an attending faculty committed to teaching. This results in a well-trained, highly qualified physician who is prepared to handle any emergency or complication. The high-quality residents who are a part of our program in turn stimulate the attending staff to stay current and on the "cutting edge."
The overwhelming portion of resident education comes from working with patients in the attending physicians' private practice. The resident is exposed to a myriad of practice styles and philosophies from which to learn. This close camaraderie frequently extends beyond the residency program: each year, usually one or two residents stay at Baylor to join a practice.
Additionally, the program conducts its own outpatient clinic, which resembles a private practice. Each resident is part of a small team, similar to a small group practice. Senior residents, who act like a "senior partner" in a group practice, head the teams. An attending physician is present in all of the clinics for consultations and assistance. There is always an attending/staff physician in the hospital, 24 hours a day, to provide supervision and assistance.
Labor and delivery consists of three operating rooms and 18 LDR rooms. Adjacent to L&D is a six-bed observation/evaluation/triage unit for obstetrics. The Women's and Children's Services are closely aligned in the hospital. The postpartum unit and newborn nursery are located in the Truett building. Adjacent to this is the Jonsson building where the antepartum unit is located.
Also in the Hoblitzelle building is the intermediate-care nursery, gynecology unit and 83 NICU beds being a tertiary referral center for NE Texas. Labor and delivery, observation/triage and the antepartum floor are all tied together on one large central electronic monitoring network.
The outpatient clinic is located on the second floor of the Hoblitzelle building and L&D is directly one floor below. Our residents manage a wide variety of complicated high risk pregnancies.
