Baylor University Medical Center Dietetic Internship Program

Program Information

Our internship program provides training in clinical, administrative, and community dietetics. Each intern receives individualized training and is taught in one-on-one training relationships with our faculty. Classes taught by physicians, dietitians, department managers, and guest speakers are scheduled throughout the year to augment the intern's current knowledge and prepare the intern for hands-on experiences.

Our staff of clinical dietitians and technicians provides nutritional care for patients in the areas of diabetes, oncology, gastrointestinal, liver and renal diseases, cardiology, obesity, nutritional assessment, maternal nutrition, neonatology, rehabilitation, and geriatrics. Each intern is provided with educational opportunities in all of these areas.

The staff of administrative dietitians and foodservice managers is dedicated to providing high-quality meals to our customers. Food service is provided to the hospitalized patient, the cafeteria and restaurant patron, and the client who desires a catered event. The intern is provided with experiences in food production, employee supervision, product development, continuous quality improvement, catering, marketing, management information systems, procurement, and patient services.

In addition, the intern will have the opportunity to visit facilities in the Dallas area including Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, Buckner Retirement Services, Inc., dialysis center and several others.

We also offer six hours of graduate credit for completing the requirements of the internship through Texas Woman's University.

Upon completion of the dietetic internship at Baylor, the intern should be well-prepared to complete the registration examination for dietitians and function as a dietetic professional. We are proud of our graduates and the 95% pass rate on the examination. The commitment of the Medical Center and the department of Nutrition Services to the internship program have made Baylor's Dietetic Internship a very stable program.

The BUMC Dietetic Internship Program provides an atmosphere in which the dietetic intern can apply and augment the knowledge base acquired from the academic setting. The program strives to prepare qualified dietetic professionals by imparting to each student the educational standards established by the American Dietetic Association. The accepted principles of clinical nutrition, food service management, and community dietetics are taught on an individualized level. This program is designed to graduate students who have become entry-level professionals and who possess a state-of-the-art knowledge base, professional skills, and the ability to think independently.

Successful completion of the program should equip the intern with the knowledge and ability to apply that knowledge in the dietetic field as measured by the Registration Examination for Dietitians. The graduate of BUMC's Dietetic Internship Program is prepared to practice in multiple areas of dietetics, including foodservice systems management, therapeutic clinical practice, and normal and preventive nutrition in a variety of settings.
