Baylor Family Medicine Residency at Garland

To Residency Applicants:

I am pleased that you have taken an interest in our Residency program. The process of choosing a residency can be time consuming, expensive and at times frustrating. Beginning with this website and including our clinical clerkships and interview process, we try to make the process of residency selection as painless as possible. We want you to have all the information you need, and we will take every opportunity to get to know you as the process of residency application moves along. As part of the application process, we encourage you to get to know our residents and our faculty. Though the interview schedule is designed to give you that opportunity, you do no have to wait for the interview to get to know us. Formal clerkships are encouraged and informal visits are welcomed. Please take the time to study this website and if possible visit our residency in Garland, Texas. We have a lot to offer!

Our unopposed Family Medicine Residency is based in Baylor Medical Center of Garland, a 263 bed hospital with more than 50,000 emergency room visits per year. The medical problems of our patient population and the resources of this Baylor system hospital offer a rich learning environment for residents and medical students. In addition to training here in Garland which is on the north side of Dallas/Ft. Worth metroplex, our residents rotate to Baylor University Medical Center for Obstetrics and Neonatology, as well as to additional participating institutions outside of the Baylor Health Care System for Pediatric in-patient and emergency experience.

Our program is fortunate to have the strong support of two of the largest groups of family physicians in North Texas: Family Healthcare Associates and Family Medical Center of Garland. In addition to support from family physicians in our community, we have over 50 private sub-specialty preceptors that participate in the curriculum. The hospital administration and all of the medical staff of Baylor Medical Center at Garland are strongly supportive of the education mission of the residency program and treat the residents as colleagues and friends.

Our new residency clinic is located on the campus of the Baylor Medical Center at Garland. The building was completed in October 2002 and offers the advanced ancillary services including on site CT scanning, bone densitometry, mammography, plain films and ultrasonography. Most of these services are available to our patients on the same day as their visit to the physician.

We have assembled one of the best faculties in the state of Texas. Faculty members represent the professional spectrum from those recently out of residency to individuals with more than thirty years of clinical experience. We have developed an academic environment that is both stimulating and rewarding. Our residents participate in a wide variety of scholarly works including case reports, literature reviews, poster presentations, and basic clinical research. Model family physicians of the future must be able to navigate the seas of clinical evidence and bring pertinent information to bear on each clinical encounter. We believe that the scholarly skills you acquire here at Baylor Family Medicine Residency will serve you and your patients wherever you practice medicine.

We are a cohesive group that focuses on service to our patients and to each other. The faculty shares an unparalleled enthusiasm for teaching and a commitment to the success of each resident in the program.

Graduates of this program are competent, ethical and compassionate physicians who have established habits of continuous learning, and quality improvement. Come see for yourself!

We invite you to visit our program so you may better appreciate all we have to offer. To schedule a visit please contact Dana Warren, Residency Coordinator at (972) 272-5935.

Best Regards,

Leslie E. Tingle, M.D.
