Baylor Family Medicine Residency at Garland

Program History

Baylor Medical Center at Garland, formerly Garland Memorial Hospital, has served Garland and surrounding communities for over 40 years.

The concept of a community hospital was originally investigated in 1958 with fundraising beginning in earnest in 1961. At the dedication of the original facility in 1964, John Shaw, then administrator was handed a key to the hospital and broke the key in half, saying, "I accept this key and break it as a symbol that the doors of this hospital will never be closed to anyone who needs the services of this institution." Today, Baylor Medical Center at Garland continues to provide quality healthcare to the citizens of Garland. The Don and Ruth Buchholz Pavilion opened in 2004, adding nearly 105,000-square-feet and 50 new patient rooms to Baylor Garland for a total of 263 patient rooms. Baylor Medical Center at Garland continues to grow and respond to the medical needs of its community residents.

Patients on the Baylor Medical Center at Garland campus will find advanced medical technology in heart and vascular care, breast health, women's services, neonatal intensive care, family medicine, digestive disease, medical imaging, senior health care, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physicians on Baylor Garland's medical staff serve the health care needs of citizens in Garland, Wylie, Richardson, Rowlett, Rockwall, Sachse, Mesquite, Murphy, and Dallas.

The Baylor Family Medicine Residency at Garland is the only residency program located at Baylor Medical Center at Garland and the hospital continues to be extremely supportive of the program. The Residency Program is the fruition of Dr. Seth Cowan's dream of training Family Medicine physicians in the community environment of Garland, Texas. As an unopposed residency, the program graduated its first Family Medicine physician in 1997. Baylor Medical Center at Garland and our family medicine clinic are the core rotation sites for resident clinical experience. Residents will also experience quality rotations scheduled at Baylor University Medical Center, Children's Medical Center Dallas and Hopkins County Memorial Hospital in Sulphur Springs, Texas.
