Conferences

Residents participate in a variety of didactic activities throughout their residency. Didactics are presented by the Family Medicine faculty and community preceptors. Residents also deliver didactics to develop their investigatory and presentation skills.

Thursday Afternoon Conference
Thursday Afternoon Conference, held weekly, consists of presentations given on the core didactic curriculum which repeats every 18 months. Special focus is given to coding, practice management, behavioral medicine and research and scholarly activity discussions. Residents play an integral role in this conference, with several opportunities to present during their residency. Residents are responsible for presenting Journal Club and Case Conferences, held monthly. Each resident also prepares and presents one behavioral medicine didactic during the intern year. Balint groups and Quality Improvement Hour are also held during this conference. Lunch is provided to attendees.

  •  Balint: Residents attend Balint groups weekly with the members of their class during the first 6 months of the year and bimonthly thereafter. Balint groups are designed to provide a supportive environment for sharing and processing feelings related to patient encounters and to facilitate the understanding of the bidirectional relationship between physicians and patients.
  •  Quality Improvement Hour: Quality Improvement Hour is held the first Thursday of each month from 5:00 to 6:00 pm. Residents are organized into teams with two residents from each year level per team. The teams are coached in practiced based learning techniques and methods of rapid cycle improvement. Each team completes two process improvement projects per year and presents the results to the larger audience of the residency.
  •  Research Group: Research Group is held the second Thursday of each month from 5:00 to 6:00. Residents planning or actively engaged in a research project meet during this hour to discuss their research and address questions related to the research process. This meeting is facilitated by faculty.
