Residents will train in Baylor’s division of vascular surgery, which is within the department of general surgery. Ronald C. Jones, M.D., F.A.C.S. is the chief of General Surgery. Gregory Pearl, M.D., F.A.C.S. serves as chief of the Division and program director of the Vascular Service residency. Jesse E. Thompson, M.D., F.A.C.S. is the emeritus chief of surgery and chief consultant to the division of vascular surgery.
Vascular surgery cases are distributed among the vascular residents and the senior general surgery residents rotating on the vascular teaching service. Each year, residents perform about 350 to 400 surgeries. The vascular surgery teaching service is composed of seven staff surgeons board certified in general vascular surgery, whose wide spectrum of techniques and philosophies gives residents a strong foundation in surgery.
The caseload is varied and well balanced, including extracranial cerebrovascular reconstruction, aortic reconstructive procedures, renal and mesenteric reconstructive procedures, lower extremity revascularization and endovascular procedures as discussed above. In addition to reconstructive vascular procedures, the program provides generous exposure to hemodialysis access procedures, sympathectomy, thoracic outlet decompressive procedures and vena caval interruption. The primary emphasis of the teaching program is hands-on clinical training.
