Baylor University Medical Center is the flagship hospital of the Baylor Health Care System that serves the north Texas region with nine acute care general hospitals, short- and long-term rehabilitation facilities, the Tom Landry Sports Medical Complex, the Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital, and the Baylor Research Institute. BUMC is one of the nation's largest private hospitals and a major tertiary referral center with 980 staffed inpatient beds and the capacity to expand to over 1,400 licensed beds. In recent years, the internal medicine service has averaged about 35,000 in patient admissions and over 360,000 outpatient visits annually. The downtown BUMC campus houses six interconnected hospital buildings and 20 specialty centers including centers of excellence for treatment of asthma, digestive diseases (with special focus on cancer genetics), cardiology, and transplantation of bone marrow and solid organs. BUMC's bone marrow, lung, and liver transplant programs were the first in north Texas and remain the busiest centers in the region by a wide margin. The heart and kidney transplant program is also among the most active in the Southwest. Research carried out at the Baylor Research Institute focuses on basic and applied immunology as they relate to transplantation medicine and cancer immunotherapy. Over 400 medical research projects are active on campus at this time.
The Tom Landry Sports Medicine and Research Center, also located on our campus, is a modern 320,000-square-foot complex that includes health and fitness centers, multiple swimming and lap pools, sports medicine research facilities, and a rehabilitation center for sports medicine, cardiology, and orthopedic surgery. The Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation (BIR) and Baylor Specialty Hospital are centers dedicated to the physical, occupational, mental, and emotional rehabilitation of our patients. BUMC's PM&R postgraduate training programs are based at these facilities. The Jack and Jane Hamilton Heart and Vascular Hospital is the newest addition to our campus. This inpatient facility specializes in short-term hospitalizations for patients requiring cardiac and/or peripheral vascular evaluation and intervention.
The Baylor Health Sciences Library includes over 30,000 medical volumes, a wide variety of periodicals, and audiovisual learning tools. Computers connected to the Internet have Medline, Promed, and current contents search capabilities. The library also houses the Ruth and Lyle Sellers Medical Collection of rare books.
The John C. Bagwell, M.D. Internal Medicine Library houses major internal medicine textbooks and journals, audiovisual equipment, and online medical literature search capabilities. Computers and printers are available. This library is adjacent to the residents’ conference room and just across the hall from the on-call rooms. Residents can access the Internal Medicine Library 24 hours a day.
