Resident Life

If a team census is full (10 patients per resident), or the team is overloaded with very complicated patients who require a great deal of individual attention, the supervising resident may close the service. An admission cap limits each team to five patients per PGY-1 resident per 24-hour call period. On average, each team has a total of about 12 to 16 patients. Each PGY-1 resident is responsible for about half of the service. The number of admissions usually averages six to eight per team each call night.

When residents are on call, they can study, rest, or sleep in individual assigned call rooms. Private study carrels are provided adjacent to the call rooms. During free time, residents can watch television, shoot pool or play ping-pong in the residents’ lounge area. Residents on call receive evening meal coupons. Meals are available in the physicians’ dining area, the Truett cafeteria, or the Atrium Market.
