During the first year of the program, fellows generally spend nine or ten months on oncology services with different attending physicians. A written curriculum for each rotation is provided at its beginning which is reviewed by the fellow and faculty member. Typically, these rotations emphasize on solid tumor oncology or hematologic oncology.
In addition to rotations with attending medical oncologists, fellows complete other rotations in bone marrow transplantation, pathology, gynecologic oncology, and radiation oncology. Fellows may complete these rotations in their first or second year of the program.
During a fellow’s second year, he or she may choose to take an elective rotation for additional training with one of the other oncologists, at the Baylor University Medical Center Immunology Research Laboratory, or in another clinical or research discipline. A structured rotation in diagnostic immunology includes experience with various immunologic assays, flow cytometry, and histocompatibility typing.
An elective in pediatric oncology at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, overseen by George Buchanan, M.D., professor and director of pediatric hematology/oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, is also available. |
