At the end of the two-year program, medical oncology fellows will be proficient in the subspecialty. Clinical experience includes the opportunity to observe and manage patients with a variety of neoplastic diseases on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Each fellow spends one-half day per week in the Continuity Clinic for the entire two years of training.
Over the course of the program, the fellows become increasingly responsible for both acutely and chronically ill patients as they study the natural history of cancer and the effectiveness of various therapies. Fellows will learn appropriate use of laboratory tests, imaging techniques, biopsies, and procedures used for the diagnosis and treatment of oncologic disorders.
Teaching is patient-oriented; one attending oncologist works with one fellow. Oncology rotations are designed so that each trainee spends one or two months with an attending oncologist and participates fully in inpatient and outpatient settings.
