Medical education is one of Baylor University Medical Center’s top priorities. The training of clinically proficient medical oncologists is both challenging and rewarding. The goal of the Medical Oncology Fellowship program is to train internists to become highly skilled in managing patients with neoplastic diseases. Mastering these skills gives the fellow the ability to provide quality patient care, interpret critical data within the discipline, conduct sound clinical studies, and train future internists.
Medical oncology is an exciting field of medicine that is rapidly evolving, especially in the areas of genetics, molecular biology and immunology. Advances in these core sciences will likely accelerate in the future leading to more accurate and effective ways to diagnose and treat cancer patients. One of the principal objectives of our fellowship is to train new subspecialists how to apply this new information in an appropriate and cost-effective manner.
In addition to scientific and clinical expertise, the humanistic aspects of patient care are particularly important in oncology. In the training program, fellows learn to effectively communicate with patients and their families from a variety of cultural backgrounds, and gain experience in palliative and end-of-life care. The aim is to develop expertise in both the art as well as the science of medicine.
