The John S. Fordtran Diagnostic Center for Digestive Diseases: This outpatient facility includes examination rooms, conference rooms, offices, and a minor procedure room. More than 8,000 patients visit the center each year. Dr. Katherine Little is Director of the Center.

The GI Endoscopy Laboratory: This new facility houses nine procedure rooms, including three fluoroscopy units, staffed by fourteen RN GI assistants as well as supervisory, clerical, technical, and transport staff. Six to seven hundred procedures are performed monthly in the GI Endoscopy Laboratory, including upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, papillotomy, biliary manometry, small bowel enteroscopy, laparoscopy, percutaneous gastrostomy, variceal sclerotherapy, variceal banding, control of GI bleeding using thermal cautery and injection techniques, tumor ablation with YAG laser, balloon dilatation of esophageal, pyloric, duodenal, colonic, and biliary strictures, endoscopic ultrasound, and pneumatic dilatation of the esophagus.

The GI Physiology Laboratory: This unique laboratory provides tests for unusual disorders that might be needed in a referral center, especially tests developed by the research laboratory at Baylor. These tests include esophageal and anorectal manometry, 24-hour esophageal pH monitor studies, breath hydrogen testing, complete stool analysis, gastric analysis, pancreatic function tests, and intestinal perfusion studies.

The GI Research Laboratory: Clinical and basic research in this lab focuses on intestinal absorption and function. Under the direction of Dr. John S. Fordtran, the lab staff has created more than one hundred publications. Research and clinical fellows participate in various projects.

Liver Transplant Service: Baylor’s liver transplant team performs 150 adult liver transplants per year. The Gastroenterology Division evaluates all patients referred for liver transplantation. In addition, patients with a wide variety of liver diseases are seen by referral in the John S. Fordtran Diagnostic Center for Digestive Disease Clinic and in the hospital.

Gastroenterology Inpatient Ward: This new unit was established to care for patients with digestive diseases. In addition to 30 private rooms, the floor has a procedure room and a three-bed close-observation unit for patients requiring more intensive nursing care.

In addition to rotations at Baylor University Medical Center, fellows may spend time at other sites. These include:

Office Gastroenterology: Here fellows can observe common gastroenterology problems in an office-based practice in Garland, Texas. These rotations are conducted under the direction of Dr. Mark Miller and Dr. Harry Sarles.

Pediatric Gastroenterology: Fellows can explore the unique aspects of pediatric gastroenterology by spending one or two months at Children’s Medical Center of Dallas under the direction of Dr. John Anderson.

Veterans` Affairs Medical Center, Dallas: Fellows may spend one month at the Veterans’ Hospital to see gastrointestinal problems in this patient population.

Parkland Memorial Hospital, Dallas: Fellows can have a one or two month rotation on the Liver Service at Parkland Hospital, the public hospital for Dallas County.
