The cardiovascular fellowship is a three-year comprehensive training program, which includes all aspects of cardiology. Because BUMC is such a high-volume institution with a wide variety of patients, fellows gain enough experience to complete the program in three years, compared with four years at other institutions.
Clinical rotations include invasive cardiology, interventional cardiology, cardiac electrophysiology, cardiac transplantation, cardiac rehabilitation, lipids, noninvasive cardiology (including transesophageal echocardiography), nuclear cardiology, vascular medicine, and pediatric cardiology. In addition, all fellows have a 3-month rotation involving clinical research in cardiovascular pathology. In addition, each fellow will design and complete a clinical cardiology research project.
The Division of Cardiology performs about 1,600 interventional procedures each year, including atherectomy, stents, and laser techniques. The division also participates in various ongoing clinical research studies examining various interventional procedures.
The division includes four full-time electrophysiologists who are actively involved in clinical research with ongoing projects, including radiofrequency ablation, studies of investigational drugs, and the implantation of investigational defibrillator devices. These physicians perform about 300 catheter ablations, 150 defibrillator implants, and 250 pacemaker implants each year. Laser lead extractions are also performed.
