Baylor University Medical Center Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Electives

This elective is designed to expose the student to various aspects of physical medicine and rehabilitation. The elective can be individualized according to the student's interests. The student will participate in patient care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting with the attending physician and/or the resident on the rotation. Exposure to the rehabilitative care of patients with stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, amputation, neuromuscular diseases, and musculoskeletal problems will be available. Exposure to electrodiagnostics, pediatric rehabilitation and other educational opportunities may also be available if the student desires. The student will attend weekly didactic sessions with the residents.
Goals and Objectives for the student:
- perform a complete rehabilitation history and physical exam
- understand the interdisciplinary treatment approach to patients disabled by acute spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke, amputation, and other neurologic disabilities.
- understand the etiology and treatment of common medical problems in rehabilitative medicine (pressure sores, DVT, autonomic hyperreflexia, spasticity, neurogenic bowel and bladder)
- exposure to therapy prescription writing
- understand the workup and treatment options for patients with spine and musculoskeletal disorders

Accomodations:
The PM&R Department does not provide housing accommodations for students. If unable to individually arrange for housing, a student may contact Donna Van Sickler, Manager, Wilma Bass Memorial Hall, at 214-820-4002 to inquire about possible housing in that facility on the Baylor campus.
Parking:
Parking on campus is available to the student upon completion of a parking application in the Graduate Medical Education Office. A student must present his/her driver's license for copying and attaching to the parking application.
On Your First Day:
On the first day of the approved elective, the student should report at 8:15 a.m. to the PM&R Residency Program Office, 2nd Floor, Suite 251, Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation, 3505 Gaston Avenue.
