Program Information

Medical education has always been a priority in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Baylor University Medical Center.

For students from any LCME medical school, we offer a full spectrum of one-month elective rotations, including obstetrics/labor and delivery, gynecology, high-risk obstetrics, gynecologic oncology (available in selected months), and combined obstetrics and gynecology (two weeks in each service). An externship in our department is also available to fourth-year medical students.

Obstetrics/labor and delivery
This rotation emphasizes clinical care and patient contact. The chief resident and the generalist OB/GYN faculty supervise the students. Students participate in the evaluation and management of laboring patients, as well as postpartum patients. Along with the obstetrics team, students attend the obstetrics clinics and assist in prenatal care. Night call in labor and delivery is optional.

Gynecology
This rotation emphasizes clinical care and patient contact, as well as fundamentals in gynecologic surgery.

Students join the residency program's gynecology team in caring for gynecologic patients, evaluating clinic patients, and assisting in surgery. They participate in the evaluation and management of gynecologic patients in both the hospital and the outpatient clinic, and they assist in surgical procedures and perform morning and evening rounds. An upper-level resident and faculty generalist supervise each student. Night call is optional.

We recommend reading any of the following texts: Droegemuellers' Comprehensive Gynecology; Copeland's Textbook of Gynecology; or Te Linde's Operative Gynecology.

High-risk obstetrics
This rotation emphasizes high-risk obstetric clinical care, patient contact, prenatal diagnosis, and ultrasound. Students participate in the evaluation, care, and management of high-risk antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients. They see patients in the maternal-fetal medicine office, outpatient clinic, and labor and delivery unit. The maternal-fetal medicine resident and the MFM faculty supervise the students. Night call in labor and delivery is optional.

Gynecologic oncology
This rotation, available in selected months, emphasizes clinical care and patient contact, as well as fundamentals in gynecologic oncology surgery. Students participate in the evaluation and management of gynecologic oncology patients in a private office setting, in the outpatient clinic, and in the hospital. An upper-level resident and a faculty gynecologic oncologist supervise each student.

Students participate in surgical procedures and perform morning and evening rounds. They also take part in an outpatient oncology clinic with an upper-level resident and perform weekend morning rounds with a resident and attending physician. Night call is optional.

We recommend reading any of the following texts: Berek and Hacker, Practical Gynecologic Oncology; Morrow and Townsend, Synopsis of Gynecologic Oncology; Hoskins, Perez, and Young, Principles and Practice of Gynecologic Oncology; or Disaia and Creasman, Clinical Gynecologic Oncology.

Combined obstetrics and gynecology

This program combines two weeks in each service.
