Baylor University Medical Center Internal Medicine Electives
Program Information

Baylor University Medical Center offers a full spectrum of internal medicine elective rotations for students from any LCME medical school, and third-year University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center students may elect to take one half of their junior medicine rotation here. The elective courses are generally four weeks long, and elective credits are granted through the University of Texas -Southwestern Medical School.

Each elective has a unique inpatient-outpatient mix, which can often be tailored to an individual student’s needs. Our electives are based on the preceptor concept—one student interacts with one attending. The acting internship, in which a student is assigned to one of the medical services, is an exception.

All electives include academic sessions that emphasize salient points of the work-up, differential diagnoses, and therapy. Students also learn the medical, social, and financial implications of medical decisions and we emphasize compassion, empathy, and clinical scholarship in providing quality patient care.

Because transferring knowledge is an integral part of the practice of medicine, attending physicians at BUMC share insights, information, and practical skills with residents. This is a broad range of experience from which to draw, considering that BUMC is one of the nation’s largest private hospitals and a major tertiary referral center.
