Simulation Training and Research Center

The Simulation Training and Research (STAR) program at Baylor University Medical Center is a multidisciplinary, hospital-based program providing neonatal and obstetric simulation training to improve patient safety and outcomes.

The STAR program launched in 2008 focusing on perinatal and neonatal emergency simulations. In 2012, the STAR program opened its doors to a state-of-the-art simulation center providing five simulation training rooms, one consult room, a 22-person debriefing/conference room and a control center.

STAR continues to serve the obstetrical and neonatal multidisciplinary teams for Baylor University Medical Center and provides team training for other Baylor Scott & White Health affiliates and provides assistance to other specialty areas that may encounter either an obstetrical or neonatal patient.

This program allows health care professionals at all skill levels the opportunity to use interactive, lifelike manikins, task trainers and/or confederates and other equipment to simulate emergencies and other situations in an environment where no harm can be done to the patient.

The STAR program is dedicated to excellence in patient safety by improving the multidisciplinary team performance with focus on Crisis Resource Management (CRM) principles, in addition to focusing on cognitive and technical skills. Training is conducted through video observation and group debriefing.

Goals

  • Improve patient safety and quality of care
  • Improve teamwork and communication with focus on CRM principles
  • Promote learning in a safe, controlled environment
  • Improve response to unusual emergency situations without risk to the patient
  • Identify gaps in system processes through implementation of in-situ drills

Training is customized to serve clients and learners in a setting that replicates their environment and resources. Current programs include:

  • Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) Mega Code
  • Obstetrical emergencies
  • Neonatal emergencies
  • Transport team training (maternal and neonatal)
  • Internship training (nursing, physicians, advanced practice nurses)
  • Train-the-Trainer (simulation facilitator training)
  • Skills training
  • In-Situ drills
